The festive season is once more upon us if – like many - you need to get some Christmas shopping done, then you’re spoilt for choice in a city like London.
And whilst many head to the capital’s famous West End district, to browse the stores of Oxford Street, Regent’s Street and Covent Garden, there are also plenty of local options.
Here in our area, Hampstead and the neighbouring locale, there are plenty of local, independent businesses that appreciate custom and not only do you get to support small stores but you don’t have to struggle home on the tube with all your packages!
So look no further for your specialChristmas gifts - our list is not definitive but has a bit of everything - and if you don’t celebrate this particular holiday then why not spoil yourself…and spread the cheer.
Daunt Books
Let’s face it, who doesn’t enjoy curling up with a good book on a cold winter’s day…and whether it’s a novel, biography or childrens’ classic Daunt Books is the place to pick up your printed matter.
Daunt was established back in 1990 as an independent travel bookstore and its flagship branch in Marylebone is an instagrammers paradise. There are now branches all over the capital, including one in South End Green, near us.
Truthfully, whether you’re just browsing or an avid bibliophile, this is a must-visit place - their choice of books is wide, and the staff are helpful and knowledgeable.
The Hampstead Butcher
The Hampstead Butcher is the perfect place not just to pick up a bird (and, no, we’re not being sexist!) for your Christmas lunch but plenty more besides.
This premier local butcher is also a delicatessen, selling cheese, wine, charcuterie and all kinds of tasty snacks. All of the meat is free-range (with home-made sausages, tasty pies and award-winning scotch eggs) as well as marinades and oven-ready cuts.
This is a place where the staff really care about their produce and although it’s not the cheapest, everything is of high quality and will really leave a fine taste in your mouth!
Happy Returns Toy Store
There are toys galore in this small Hampstead store, which aims to enrich families by encouraging them to ‘play smarter.’ through inspiring creativity and curiosity. With a wide range of stock, and something for a range of budgets, whether you’re looking for a teddy bear, a jigsaw or an abacus we think you’ll find it at Happy Returns.
Even better, the staff are so knowledgeable and enthusiastic that you’ll leave feeling you’ve really found the perfect gift. This is a true ‘old-fashioned toy shop’ which gives both Amazon and Hamleys of Regent Street a run for their money! What a great reason to buy local!
Cancer Research Charity Shop
Christmas isn’t just about receiving gifts - it’s about giving to those less fortunate than yourself and there’s no better way to do this than by purchasing from a charity shop. Cancer Research is one of the UK’s most known charities and has stores all over the country which sell fantastic second-hand clothes, homeware, toys and branded goods such as pocket diaries and tea towels.
The Cancer Research store in Hampstead (next door to the famous crepe stall) is a treasure trove of a place - inside, you’ll find high-end labels (heavily discounted), leather boots and handbags, jewellery, vases, toys and even classic vinyl.
And not only is it considerably cheaper than buying something brand new, you’re keeping down your carbon footprint and your money will go towards valuable research against a disease that hurts so many.
Giacobazzi Delicatessen
This family-run business, specialising in authentic, quality Italian produce, is the perfect place to pick up ingredients for cooking, not to mention biscuits, snacks and even a traditional panettone (the cake every Italian loves at Christmas time!)
As well as all of the regular provisions (think pasta, meat, fish, jams, honey and olive oil) Giocabazzi have a special Christmas menu this year which includes sweet treats like amaretti cookies, pistachio nougat, candied chestnuts and traditional Tuscan biscotti…
With fresh pasta, pesto sauce so heavenly that you will cry and a tiramisu that is simply divine, it’s really worth paying a bit more to buy a few things here - and have a coffee whilst you’re at it, because this Italian family knows their coffee…
Hampstead Community Market
The Hampstead Community Market might be small but it’s a fine spot to pick up fruit and vegetables.
However, at the weekend, there are also stalls inside and this December, with the holiday approaching, you’ll find vendors selling all kinds of unique products.
Whether you’re looking for artisan jewellery and handmade soaps or second-hand clothing and old books you will find it here, and now that it’s that time of the year, there’s a good chance that their vintage Christmas card pop-up shop will be back.
This small market also sells teas and coffees, along with homemade cakes and biscuits, so it’s the perfect place to take a load off your feet after all your hard work…
Maje Womens’ Clothing
This is the place to head if you’re looking for good quality, stylish wear - it’s a leading French brand that sells items that are elegant and understated, and rather on trend too.
With its ready-to-wear collections, Maje is a leader in accessible luxury and perfect for any woman looking for urban, modern pieces. Bold cuts, sequined shirts, and festive must-haves like ruffled dresses, tweed jackets, and wide-leg pants can all be paired with pretty accessories.
And it won’t break the bank either!
